Diesel Prices Threaten Small Business Owners/Independent Truck Drivers/Arizona Moving Company

Mark Mallas
I’m sure everyone has notice the price of gasoline in Phoenix, Arizona. Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Mesa, Tempe, you name it, the price of gas is going up. What you might not have notice is that diesel is not more expensive than normal gasoline. For the first time in history, diesel is more expensive than gas. Diesel is cheaper to make so this is confusing to all diesel users. Moving companies, truckers, and all small business that must use diesel to keep their business going is being devastated by this price increase. A sharp, quick increase in any business expense can leave business owners reeling.
We refine diesel in the United States, and export it to Mexico. It is cheaper there than here. There was a story of a small business owner from Apache Junction, Arizona that drove to Mexico just to get gas for her business, yes it was cost effective. This is insanity. The government says it because they don’t have the environmental standards that the US has. But we allow their trucks to enter and do business in our country with the “substandard” diesel. This hypocrisy of our government is clearly designed to put the small business owner out of business. If we can subsidize farmers billions of dollars to not grow food, when there are starving people in the world, then I’ll bet they could free up some money so that our country can hedge in the oil and heating oil market(diesel using this type of oil). They could give every business owner that uses diesel money to help pay for the increase, or they could flat out price control the commodity(They have done this in the past with gold, and as far as I know, gold doesn’t fuel trucks, or is it edible.)
Consolidation in the moving industry is no different. As small moving companies must pay higher and higher diesel prices(larger companies buy in bulk, arrange deals, etc..(produce their own with fat byproducts, etc…) and can pay much less per gallon that a smaller company). When there are less moving companies, the consumer has less choices, and every American knows what happens when your choices are diminished. Try getting a bank to take your threat seriously of going to another bank because their fees are ridiculous. All the banks now have the same fees. And with less banks, you are basically running out of options. Less trucking companies, less railroad companies, less freight companies, fewer Banks, fewer retail choices, etc…)
So support your small business owners and independent truckers. Write to your congressman, don’t use large companies when possible, and make your voice heard. The fate of the small business owner is at stake in the next 5-10 years, and we should be aware of the consequences of what diminishing choice has on the economy.
